Our Goals

reaching out to all pacific women

The purpose for the PWHRDU is to initiate, strengthen and promote excellence in care for Pacific women by:

  • initiating and supporting clinical and services research that will inform policies and care of Pacific women
  • fostering networking and partnerships amongst individuals and organisations in NZ and the Pacific to further the Unit’s aims
  • advocating for policies and models of care that benefit Pacific women’s health
  • enhancing opportunities for training of Pacific postgraduates and those who wish to work in areas where there is a large number of Pacific women

Therefore, the PWHRDU adopts the following objectives to deliver on its goals:

  1. To initiate, promote and conduct clinical and services research into priority areas that will inform and benefit the health of Pacific women.
    Strategies:
    • Establish an inter-disciplinary network of scholars and researchers by initiating and supporting applications for grants
    • Initiate and perform research into Pacific women’s health
    • Develop the Unit’s research funding base
  2. To collaborate with Pacific leaders, educational institutions, professional organisations and communities in NZ, and other Pacific countries to further research and services in Pacific women’s health.
    Strategies:
    • Establish the Unit’s networks and research capabilities
    • Work with Pacific leaders in the Pacific and NZ, professional colleges and different agencies to promote the Unit’s work
  3. To build a new focal point of exchange on Pacific women’s health with local and regional research communities.
    Strategies:
    • Establish linkages to major Pacific health research groups and health providers especially those in women’s health.
  4. To enhance research and training opportunities for those who are interested in Pacific women’s health
    Strategies:
    • Link experienced researchers and training institutions either in NZ or other Pacific rim countries with Pacific researchers and postgraduate students
  5. To communicate and disseminate the outcomes of relevant Pacific women’s health research and contribute to policy formulation in Pacific women’s health.
    Strategies:
    • Achieve through publications and community outreach and extensive programme of events like conference and symposium
    • Contribute to policy formulation through publications and representations
